Three Options for an M Lok Picatinny Rail
The Picatinny rail is a military standard interface for weapon customization that emerged in the 1980s as part of work done by the A.R.M.S. company. It was standardized by the army in 1995. The design of the rail was meant to facilitate the mounting of a scope on a high-powered rifle, but, after its standardization, an entire cottage industry has sprung up around the Picatinny (or Pic) rail, producing scopes, tactical lights, night vision sights, foregrips, laser sights, bayonets, and more. The Picatinny rail’s elegant design – a “flattened T” strip provided with crosswise slots spaced at an interval of 10.01 millimeters – has ensured its continued use over the past quarter-century. Designs, however, can always be improved upon.
The M Lok Picatinny Rail system was released in 2016 by Magpul Industries to replace their older Magpul Original Equipment System. Compared to the Picatinny rail system, the Magpul M Lok provides a slimmer, lighter handguard, or fore-end. This is achieved through fenestration, a design concept that places small gaps in the metal, which the gun accessories lock into. Fenestration allows for a lighter rail system than the Picatinny rail, which typically has rail slots along the length of its body, resulting in a bulkier product with poor barrel ventilation.
