How to Grow Mung Bean Sprouts
There are mainly 2 ways to sprout mung beans. These simple methods are explained step by step below to guide you in growing mung bean sprouts properly.
How to grow mung bean sprouts using cheesecloth
This is the most common and traditional way of growing mung bean sprouts. This widely used method is simple and can be done through the following steps.
- Wash and clean the mung beans thoroughly, remove the stone and debris. It is also important to remove broken beans to grow healthy sprouts.
- Soak the cleaned mung beans in lukewarm water. The mung beans must be covered completely in enough water. Keep it soaked for at least 8 hours. Some beans might need a longer soak time. If you can find a broken skin, then the bean is ready to sprout. Sometimes you might even find sprouts coming out while still soaking.
- After 8 hours, wash them in clean water and drain them in a sieve.
- Take out a clean muslin or thin cotton or cheesecloth. Wash it clean and squeeze the excess water.
- Spread the damp cheesecloth on a tumbler, preferably a colander with a bowl below it.
- Now, spread the mung beans evenly on the cheesecloth. For better results, use only mung beans worth one-third area of the colander so that the mung beans hardly touch each other.
- You can either tie the cheesecloth tight with a knot on top or just flip the excess cloth over the mung beans to protect them. You must ensure sufficient space for air circulation is maintained to avoid the development of an odor.
- Now pour water on top of the mung beans covered with the cheesecloth. The excess water drained in the bowl has to be disposed of to avoid bacterial growth.
- Partially cover the colander with a lid and keep it in a dark and warm place. If you need the best results, the ideal temperature needed for sprouting is 20C.
- Make sure the cheesecloth is damp and never let it go dry as moisture is essential for good sprout growth.
