How to Build the Potential to Make Your Own Decisions

Life is not a barrel of laughs. You will find several situations when you turn to your parents and friends for assistance. The support you may seek can be either emotional or financial. Much as you independently make decisions, you will need to have someone for help at one point of life.

Your best friends and family will always be there in your hour of need, but overly dependence debilitates you, worsens your ability to make decisions. If you want to make an independent journey, you will have to determine the level of dependency you have with other people.

  • Are you emotionally dependent?
  • Are you financially dependent?
  • Are you dependent on each aspect of your life?

Of course, you would like to take an opinion of others before making a significant life change. If you are dependent for your everyday decisions, your survival will become more stringent. Here is how you can avoid being dependent on others.

Overcome your fear

Have you ever thought what keeps you from making your own decisions? Why do you bank on other people for your everyday choices? You are sceptical that you will make the wrong decision. You do not have confidence that what you are about to do is right. You fear that it will go against you. However, the other reason could be that you do not want to step out from your comfort zone.

Fear is like a chain and ball. It will keep you from realizing your potential to make decisions. Try to overcome it. Motivate yourself and think you can do it; you have the potential to do it.

Stick to your decision

The first step to discover your strength and potential is to declare your independence. You share your intention to become independent with the other person. A mix of emotions like bewilderment, sadness, wrath etc. will grip you – after all, you have been trying to step out of your comfort zone.

Communicate your message and clearly express that it is about you – only you. You do not need to regret and apologise just because you are standing up against the trend.

For instance, financial dependence is ubiquitous. Even though you make all your everyday decisions yourself, you seek financial assistance from others when you need money.

If you would like to borrow money, you will have to choose between very bad credit loans with no guarantor and credit cards. It makes arduous to decide because both have different pros and cons. It seems like you are stuck between a devil and a deep blue sea. Well, overcome your fear. Find out what suits your budget and plunge in.

Think about yourself aloud

Independence gives liberty, but it does not mean that you will shut yourself off from the world. You cannot be completely self-reliant. Freedom makes you able to make your own decisions. This helps you think about yourself. However, it does not allow for that you will not care about others’ feelings.

Dependency often results in having your needs neglected and ignored. If you start taking care of yourself, you will be spurred on making decisions independently. Here is how you can do it:

  • Manage your needs regularly. Have some time for yourself.
  • Embrace real interests. Do what you fancy.
  • Practice self-motivation and self-inspiration.

Learn to say “No”

Excess of everything is terrible; you cannot blindly trust suggestions made by others as they can take advantage of your innocence. It can be miserable. Make sure that you can weigh it up.

Say no if you do not feel like doing something. It can be hard in the first place, but this is for your benefit. Give priority to yourself. Do not think that it will hurt their feelings because it will have an impact on your life. If you believe this may harm you down the line, do not fight shy of saying any decorously.

Developing a habit of making decisions independently is not rocket science. You need to build confidence in you that you can do it and what you are doing is right. When fear claws its tentacles around your spine at the time of decision making, you should chant a powerful mantra – You are not a bird. Nobody can ensnare you. You are a human being, and you have an independent will.

So, when are you going to break the bars of your dependent world? Inculcate a spirit into you and start living your life independently.
